Citizenship/Naturalization

Helping People to Become Citizens Through the Naturalization Process

Are you a legal permanent resident now qualified to apply for citizenship, but are not sure how to proceed? Many legal permanent residents are eligible, but avoid the process of becoming citizens, known as naturalization. Without U.S. citizenship, legal permanent residents forego a host of important benefits.

At Bilfield & Associates in Lorain and Cleveland, Ohio, our immigration attorneys have the skills necessary to represent people throughout the naturalization process. If you have a question about naturalization, contact us to schedule an initial consultation that is 100% confidential.

Why Become a Citizen?

The constitution and laws of the United States provide certain benefits only to U.S. citizens, which include, among others:

  • Voting
  • Traveling with a U.S. passport
  • Eligibility for federal jobs
  • Becoming an elected official
  • Immigration benefits for family members
  • Avoid deportation/removal

Qualifications of Becoming a U.S. Citizen

There are certain requirements that must be met in order to become a U.S. citizen, which include:

  • 18 years old
  • Lawfully admitted
  • Five years of continuous residence or legal permanent resident (LPR); Three years if LPR status obtained through marriage
  • Must be physically present in U.S. for half of the time
  • 3 months in USCIS district when application filed
  • Good moral character
  • English and civics knowledge

Despite the fact that over eight million legal permanent residents are currently eligible to apply for citizenship, only a fraction actually attempt to become citizens. If you are considering becoming a U.S. citizen, the first thing that you should do is speak to one of our experienced immigration attorneys at Bilfield & Associates. We can guide you through the naturalization process and help you complete the required forms. We can also direct you to community English language classes, if necessary, and advise you about the subjects on the civics test.

Take advantage of becoming a U.S. citizen by speaking to a lawyer at Bilfield & Associates about the naturalization process. To learn more, contact us to schedule an initial consultation that is 100% confidential.
